Scenario

The Art of Creating a Business

Scenario

Begin with a Dream

Creating a business is like creating a design. An artist starts with an image of the finished piece in their mind. The businessperson starts with a concept or idea in their mind too. Both the designer and the businessperson begin to pull the initial components together to see how they fit and work together. And, they create a rough prototype to get a feel for thing.

Look at the Big Picture

Then they both take a step back to take a look at the big picture and ask themselves questions like:

  • Who is their perfect market?
  • What will they price/range be?
  • Can it be reproduced indefinitely? ... efficiently?
  • Is this the best it can be?
  • What changes need to be made to satisfy all the questions above?

Tweak / Refine / Make it Right

Then the artist and the businessperson take the project back to the drawing board to tweak and refine it making sure that it stands up to the four components of their business plan:

  • Research & Development (they check the demographics, competition, and their resources),
  • Capital & Finance (they run the numbers),
  • Production & Distribution (what is the work and how will it get done),
  • Sales & Marketing (they determine how to sell it)
  • making it just right to take to the marketplace.

Pay Attention to Details

Both the artist and the businessperson notice all the little details that pop regarding their creation along the way: problems with design, options for vendors, comments or critiques from their test market, requests from potential clients.

Add-On / Re-Invent / Reproduce

And once the creation is completed and launched the work is never done for the artist and the business person. Their work is to continually add new creations, re-invent their operational structures, and reproduce more and more variations of their creations for their audience to tap into.

World Floral Expo is one such example. It was the dream of Dick vanRaamsdonk. It began in New York City in 2000 as Agriflor USA. Then moved to Miami as World Floral Expo in 200? And, is now in its ___ successful year as an industry trade show like no other.

Once something as wonderful as WFE is created, it's up to us to honor it by attending, participating, and enjoying it to the fullest extent so it can grow, thrive, and continually get bigger and better for us. Flowerhandlers will be exhibiting and participating with WFE in Miami in March. Hope to see you there enjoying the art and the business of the global floral industry.

"Give and Take... For to the bee a flower is a fountain of life. And to the flower a bee is a messenger of love.
And to both, bee and flower the giving and the receiving is a need and an ecstasy."

Kahlil Gibran
